Rocket Radar for 10-4-26: Responsibility

🚀 Week 8: Responsibility

As we continue to talk about how our Portrait of a Rocket competencies bring our mission of Empowering Students to Reach Their Full Potential to action, we will focus this week on Responsibility. Whether our students go directly into the workforce or military, enter college, or become entrepreneurs, being able to communicate, have integrity, show responsibility, utilize critical thinking, demonstrate leadership, and display empathy are essential skills for success.

Responsibility means taking ownership of your choices, actions, and commitments. It means doing what you are expected to do, following through on your commitments, taking care of your responsibilities, and being willing to accept the consequences of your choices.

🏠 How can families practice this at home? Give your student opportunities to take ownership of age-appropriate responsibilities. This might mean keeping track of homework and assignments, remembering what they need for school or activities, completing household chores, caring for their belongings, or following through on a commitment they have made.

Instead of immediately solving a problem for your student, try asking questions such as, “What do you need to do next?”; “How can you take care of that?”; or “What could you do differently next time?” These questions help students think through problems, make decisions, and take ownership of their responsibilities.

It is also important to recognize that responsibility does not mean never making mistakes. Responsible people make mistakes, learn from them, and take the necessary steps to make things right. When students learn to own their choices and follow through on their commitments, they are developing a skill that will serve them well in school, work, relationships, and life.

Speaking of responsibility, please ensure you and your student driver are driving responsibly on our campus. Be sure you drive slowly, and look out for pedestrians. This is also a great time to remember that Ohio law states that drivers must stop at least 10 feet away from the front or rear of a stopped school bus when its red lights are flashing and/or its stop arm is extended.

Keep in mind that we are a drug-free, tobacco-free, and vape-free campus. Finally, we ask that you make sure to throw any trash into the trashcans located throughout our campus. Thank you for your help making our campus clean and safe!
